Notes from the Field: Peace Dale Library

Built in 1891 as a memorial to Rowland Hazard, the Richardsonian Romanesque Hazard Memorial Building has stood watch over the village of Peace Dale for over a century. The interior of the building is as impressive as the exterior, and their extensive collection of South County materials is a must-see for anyone interested in the Hazard family, or in the history of South Kingstown.

Notes from the Field: Clouds Hill House Museum

High atop a beautiful hill in Warwick, RI, sits the Clouds Hill House Museum, perched in all its stoic glory among luscious gardens and shady trees, harkening from something out of a children’s storybook. Notes from the Field: Gilbert Stuart Birthplace & Museum

The Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum, located in Saunderstown RI, is a fascinating place dedicated to the life and portraits of Gilbert Stuart. Both mills date from the 1700′s and one was used to grind whitecap flint corn into corn meal. Today the museum runs demonstrations of this mill several times a year.

Notes from the Field: RHODI visits Block Island

Last Thursday, the RHODI team traveled to Block Island to visit three sites for our survey: the Island Free Library, the Block Island Historical Society, and the Southeast Lighthouse Foundation. As other Rhode Islanders may recall, the weather was just the slightest bit foggy, and we enjoyed quite an eerie ferry ride to the island:

Notes from the Field: Miniature Books

Back in April, the RHODI Project visited the North Kingstown Free Library, which is home to an incredible local history collection. As you can see from their website, they have a wealth of resources (some of which are digitized or indexed online), both in terms of primary sources and bibliographic resources documenting the history of the area.
