Notes from the Field: Gilbert Stuart Birthplace & Museum

The Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum, located in Saunderstown RI, is a fascinating place dedicated to the life and portraits of Gilbert Stuart. In addition to Stuart, the museum also contains a vital glimpse at early industry in Rhode Island, as they have two working water powered mills. Both mills date from the 1700′s and one was used to grind whitecap flint corn into corn meal. Today the museum runs demonstrations of this mill several times a year.

Notes from the Field: Revisiting Coggeshall Farm

Our official RHODI visit to Coggeshall Farm took place back in February, immediately following the big winter storm that hit Rhode Island that month. The farm was, as you would expect, extremely beautiful in the snow, and our winter tour gave us a great glimpse into what it would be like to operate a farm, year-round, as though the year is 1799.

Notes from the Field: City Archives of Providence

The RHODI Project recently had the pleasure of visiting with City Archivist Paul Campbell at the City Archives of Providence. Housed in Providence City Hall, the experience was enthralling and enlightening. Mr. Campbell gave us an amazing behind the scenes tour of all the nooks and crannies of the Archival storage spaces, as well as an in depth look at exactly how they operate.
